Breast Cancer Screening Rates Are Falling, Causing Concern Among Some Health Officials
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that the percentage of women who get regular mammography screenings declined by almost two percent between 2000 and 2005. The decrease means that over one million women annually are no longer getting screened from (76.4 percent to 74.6 percent). Health officials are concerned that the decrease of regular screenings can lead to increased deaths from breast cancer.
"It's important to remember that 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer at some time their life, which makes screening and early detection extremely imortant," says Janice Ugale, MD, a radiologist with the Women's Imaging Center at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center. "Mammography greatly improves treatment options, increases the chances for successful treatment, and survival."

Breast Cancer Screening Saves Lives
According to the American Cancer Society: "Mammography is the single most effective method of early detection, since it can identify cancer several years before physical symptoms develop. Treatment is more successful when cancer is discovered early (Breast Cancer Facts & Figures 2007-2008).
